When Should I Worry About a Headache?

Headaches are such a common condition that it is likely everyone has experienced some sort of head pain before. Many times, headaches are caused by minor issues and can be easily remedied. In rarer circumstances, they can indicate a medical emergency.

We can help you better understand the nature of headaches below! Our AFC Urgent Care Chapman Highway team explains what red flags to watch out for when it comes to serious headaches.

How Can I Help My Headache?

If you are going about your day and start to experience head pain, see if you can remedy the situation with some simple steps. Drink some water, stop whatever you are doing and rest for a while, and focus on something other than a screen.

If that doesn’t work, you can try some OTC pain medication if your pain is mild and you aren’t experiencing any other symptoms. If your head pain is severe or if it is accompanied by any of the other symptoms listed below, you could be suffering from something more serious like a blood clot, tumor or the beginnings of a stroke.

Headache Warning Signs

  • Sudden and severe pain
  • Pain accompanied by fever or stiff neck
  • Headaches after an injury or accident
  • Vision changes
  • Numbness or paralysis on the body

When Should I Seek Medical Attention for a Headache?

Any time you are in significant pain or are experiencing any of those warning signs, seek medical attention. The longer you wait, the worse your situation could become. In cases like a blood clot or a stroke, quick action is crucial to preventing long term issues or even death.

Once you have been evaluated for your headache, you will most likely be given a series of tests like a CT scan or MRI to search for a diagnosis. If a serious issue is discovered, you will be admitted to the hospital or referred to a specialist that can further help you. Never take severe and sudden head pain lightly!

Things to Avoid When You Have a Headache

  • Alcohol
  • Bright lights or a busy atmosphere
  • Loud music
  • TV screens or your cell phone
