What Can I Do to Protect Myself From Illness?- AFC Urgent Care

This is a question on the minds of many of us these last few months. While we’ve been staying at home and social distancing, we’ve also been wondering whether we should be doing more to protect our health and that of our families. That’s why in today’s blog, our team at AFC Urgent Care Chapman Highway wants to talk you through a few illness prevention basics that can help. Read on as we share some tips.

How Can I Stay Illness-Free Right Now?

Well, this is a bit complicated, since what we know about COVID-19 is still evolving. But there are some good basics you can practice at all times that will help lower your risk of getting sick. Practicing those basics and taking the CDC-recommended guidance on how to prevent illness right now are steps in the right direction. The CDC recommends continuing to practice social distancing, staying at home when possible and wearing masks in public especially when social distancing is not possible.

Illness Prevention Basics

  • Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds a time.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Wipe down commonly touched surfaces in your home and car often.
  • Take steps to both clean and disinfect your home at least every few days.
  • Wave or practice an alternate greeting instead of shaking hands.

What Else Can I Do to Protect My Health?

In addition to practicing good hygiene and disinfecting, you can also work to boost your immune system. How can you do that? Practicing healthy lifestyle habits can help. Exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet, get plenty of quality sleep, don’t smoke, practice stress management techniques and limit your alcohol consumption.

Foods to Boost Your Immune System

  • Broccoli
  • Garlic
  • Spinach
  • Seeds
  • Mushrooms
  • Ginger
  • Chicken
  • Peppers
  • Citrus fruits
